CONVERSION TO RESTAURANT
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

The design transforms a former clothing retail space in Queens into a warm, contemporary Peruvian restaurant inspired by the material richness and layered textures found throughout Lima’s evolving dining scene. A sculptural green tiled feature anchors the interior, paired with earthy terracotta brick, patterned mosaic flooring, warm wood millwork, and soft plaster walls to create a tactile and inviting atmosphere. The space balances refined detailing with an approachable neighborhood character, using handcrafted materials, and intimate seating arrangements to evoke both hospitality and a sense of discovery.

STRATEGY

The layout is organized around a central island counter that creates a strong visual anchor upon entry. The rotisserie chicken station, positioned at the front, becomes the focal point and highlights the centerpiece of the menu. From there, circulation naturally flows along a linear sequence of food displays before opening into the kitchen, where cooking activity becomes part of the dining experience creating an energetic, open atmosphere.

COORDINATION

As the space was previously a clothing retail store, the project required an entirely new MEP infrastructure to support restaurant use, including new kitchen exhaust, exposed ductwork, upgraded electrical service, and a new sprinkler system. Close coordination allowing exposed ceiling elements to contribute to the open, industrial character of the restaurant while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic.

EXECUTION

Execution of the project involved close coordination with the contractor to carefully study and mock up the layout of the green tile on site. Particular attention was given to tile alignment, grout consistency, corner conditions, and how the handmade variations interacted with light across the curved surfaces. The process emphasized craftsmanship and material quality,
